A Half-way Point Letter from Professor Snape

Well, what do we have here? It looks like a bunch of dunderheads, to me. When we first began our… journey together, I made it quite clear that I didn’t expect any of you to really understand the beauty of the softly simmering cauldron with its shimmering words floating within, the delicate power of liquids like coffee and tea that creep through your human veins, bewitching your mind, ensnaring your senses, filling you with energy and a need to focus that cauldron of words onto the parchment before you.

And what is this? A Prefect named Niassa who has fallen behind? Lazy! Five points from Gryffindor for being an insufferable laze-about! Detention, too, where I will beat into you the process by which you should extract the essence of novel and carefully—lovingly, even—coax its contents into formation. Don’t make me channel Professor Umbridge and have you write this out by hand! And while I have no love of her, nor of Mad-Eye Moody, they both had a very clear message: VIGILANCE! PATIENCE!

Many of you feel a presence in your mind; you hear and see things. Make no mistake! You are not Harry Potter, and that is not the Dark Lord seeing through you, hearing through you, or acting through you. It is not Legilimency. Occlumency will not help you. That is the presence of the characters of your stories. Those are their voices, screaming and clamoring to be heard. Will you ignore their pleas? Will you sit idly by while they have no chance for salvation, nor for slaughter, kept in a purgatory of your own making?

Always remember that your stories—what some might refer to being akin to the Dark Arts—are many, varied, ever-changing, and eternal. Fighting them is like fighting a many-headed monster, which, each time a neck is severed, sprouts a head even fiercer and cleverer than before. By not writing and allowing your stories to take their shape, you are fighting that which is unfixed, mutating, and indestructible. You must therefore be flexible and inventive!

Now. Quills and parchment out. Cauldrons set up. Stir those words carefully. They are done simmering. It is time to crank up the heat and let them boil over. Incendio!

And carefully, now. Carefully. “Accio words.” Let them transfer to your quill and/or parchment.

Now, then. Get to work. I’ve seen better behavior out of a Norwegian Ridgeback. Failing your OWLs is not an option. I will be compelled to point out some of the cut-rate wizardry schools that we will… transfer… you to upon your failure. SO DO NOT FAIL. Below is a list of scheduled OWL study sessions. Professor Severus Snape
