LAST DAY (but still important info)

Posted by Niassa on November 30, 2017 in NaNoWriMo 2017 |

Is anyone else shocked that it’s already November 30th? Just me? I feel like this month FLEW BY. Crazy, crazy.

But, alas, today IS the last day of NaNoWriMo, and you know what that means: one last push to get that win! YOU CAN DO IT!!! Most important is for you to validate your win!

Dalek saying Validate

What does it mean to “Validate your win”? It means you copy and paste your words into the validator box here on NaNoWriMo and let NaNo count your words. Be aware that the number may not exactly match what your word processor says, but it is usually very close.

Note: NaNoWriMo does NOT hold on to any of your words. It is run through a program that counts your words and then dumps your words. There are still some that prefer to not submit their words, and that is okay. There are a few options you can choose in order to validate:

Steps to validate:

  1. At the top of the page, hover your mouse over where it says “Your words so far” (this is where you’ve likely been updating your word count).
  2. Select where it says “Check your official word count.”
  3. Copy and paste your text into the box (this is your entire manuscript, whether the text is obfuscated, Lorem Ipsum, or just the actual words of your manuscript) and then select the Validate button.

That’s it! The word counting engine will run your words through and validate your win!

Okay, enough about Validating. Let’s get on to more fun stuff. The TGIO Party!

  • Location: Bellwether, 5126 E. Colfax Avenue, Denver, CO 80220
  • Date: Sunday, December 3rd
  • Time: 3pm – 5pm
  • Bring: Your self, your novel (if you’d like to read an excerpt), and a book or books if you’d like to participate in the book swap

If you are planning to attend the TGIO party, please RSVP in this forum thread, just so we can let Bellwether know how many of us to expect! There will also be a big reveal at the TGIO party that you won’t want to miss!

We do still have some write-ins today for that final push. This is where you can find them:

  • 9am – 12pm: Illegal Grounds Coffeehouse
  • 3:30pm – 5:00pm: Nixon’s Coffee House
  • 3:30pm – 5:30pm: CWI Partner Anythink Library Brighton
  • 5:30pm – 7:30pm: Westminster College Hill Branch Library
  • 6:00pm – 8:30pm: *OFFICIAL* Panera of Parker
  • 7:00pm – 9:00pm: NOT A WRITE IN—Open Mic Celebration at BookBar… come read from your NaNo work!

Speaking of write-ins… if you were one of our amazing volunteers this year and hosted a write-in and collected names of people at your write-ins as we asked you to do for data-collection purposes, first of all THANK YOU! Secondly, if you have collected names but haven’t filled out the HQ form and/or the Data Collection spreadsheet, don’t worry! Tomorrow (FRIDAY) night at Perkins on Colorado Blvd starting at 8pm, the write-in will still go on (and continues year-round, for anyone interested). We thought it might be a good time to get together and we can all go through filling out the form and spreadsheet together, in case there are any questions. If you can’t make it tomorrow, no worries! We can also do this at the TGIO party on Sunday. Of course, you don’t have to do it with us—you are always welcome to just go ahead and get it done on your own. As long as we get the data in, that’s the most important.

And finally, thank you all EVER SO MUCH for being such an awesome region. We have really enjoyed getting to know you this year and hope to see even more of you come out to events with us next year. We plan a lot of events here in Denver, from regular write-ins to overnight writing retreats at the Stanley… and we are looking to do even more next year! We will start sending out emails in SEPTEMBER, so look for them in your inbox. We will also be posting on social media (Facebook and Twitter, mostly), so be sure you’re following there. Here are some events we are hoping to plan for next year:

  • Kick-off party on October 31st starting at 10pm. Location not sealed as of yet, but we are hoping to utilize Enchanted Grounds Highlands Ranch again. Mark your calendars!
  • Museum write-in. This was a huge hit this year, and very productive for those that attended.
  • Stanley Hotel/Condo Writing Retreat/Write-in. This, too, was very productive this year, and next year we are looking to do a TWO NIGHT getaway, as we found the overnight felt rushed and a bit hectic. We are looking to plan for the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving again, as it’s the last weekend of the month (perfect for that final push). Mark your calendars! Assuming prices stay the same, for two nights it will be approx. $130/person. More information to come on this! We are also looking to have one of the days be one where those who can’t afford to do the overnight thing but still want to come up and write with us can come up for an all-day write-in.
  • *NEW* Write-a-thon to raise money for NaNoWriMo! We haven’t decided on a day or specific details yet, but we are thinking it might be fun to collect “pledges” based on how many words we can write in a set amount of time. The people will pledge to pay/donate whatever matches the pledge. (For example, $5 for every thousand words in a four hour time period. If someone write 4000 words, the pledger/donor would donate $20 to NaNoWriMo, either directly or through you.)
  • Much, much more!

We hope you had as great of a time this year as we did. We’ll send out a little survey in the next week or so to get your feedback on what you liked this year, what could be improved, etc. We’re here for you and to help make your NaNoWriMo experience the best it can be!

Now… DON’T FORGET TO VALIDATE! Stop reading this stupid-crazy long email and go write. Get that final push. AND VALIDATE! See you at the TGIO Party on Sunday!

Write on? Right on!
